(Editor’s note: This letter was written for Pelican Rapids School families, following the elementary school shootings last week in Texas. The statement from Superintendent Brian Korf is reprinted here for Press readers.)

We are shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Texas yesterday. We share in the heartbreak we are all feeling for the families who have lost a loved one due to this senseless act of violence.

School should and must be a place where students feel completely safe and secure. As an added precaution, we are working with the Pelican Rapids Police Department to increase their presence around our buildings during school hours. Please stay aware of your surroundings at home, in the community, and at school. Report any concerns you may have to the local police department or building administration.

We know that children and teens will process this news in different ways… Therefore, we strongly encourage any students to stop by the office at any time, and we will connect you to a counselor at Viking Elementary or Pelican Rapids High School.

Please join us in keeping the students, staff, and families of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District in our thoughts at this time.

Sincerely,
Brian Korf
Pelican Rapids Schools Superintendent
