American Legion Auxiliary  Ellingson/Brendan Post #376 of Rothsay, MN met on December 1, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Westfall Apartments.

The meeting opened with a “Prayer for Christmas Morning.” Pledge to American Flag was recited and the Star Spangled Banner was sung. The Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion Auxiliary was also recited.

Pearl Harbor Day is December 7. It is a day of Remembrance and Respect. President Phyllis Morrill gave some interesting facts about that day–the surprise attack on the USS Arizona and countless lives lost that day.

National Security Month: Now is the time to have a Car Safety Kit in your car. Suggested items to have are a metal coffee can to hold candles, matches, instant soup, and cereal; also clothing, blanket, flashlight, batteries, medications, cell phone, etc.

Elaine M. Balken reported on available scholarships from the Legion and Auxiliary. They are: Spirit of Youth Scholarships for Junior members of American Legion, Health Care Scholarship, Non-Traditional Student Scholarship, Children of Warriors Scholarship, National Presidents Scholarship, and Financial Assistance Scholarship. The scholarships range from $1,000 and up. Deadline to apply is March 2017.

Girls State will be June 11-17. This is for Junior high school students. They learn about how Minnesota government operates. The deadline to register is March 1, 2017.

Lou Opsahl and Tracy Buccholz gave a report on treating local school staff with apples during National Education Week.

The Bloodmobile is coming to the Rothsay Community Center on December 27 from 1-5 p.m.

Christmas cards with “Pocket Angels” in them were sent to local service men and women from Rothsay area. Those serving are Kyle Dupree, Kyle Zimmerman, Cole Lang, Angie Polo, Misty Samuel, James Holland, Trevor Nitz, Bobbie Nitz, Derek Nordic and Mark Paler.

Christmas cards were signed from our auxiliary and sent to veteran residents at Fergus Falls Veterans Home.
