Many of us learned to type on an unforgiving contraption like this one. Deliberate force and sustained pressure were needed to transfer the ink to the paper, and you couldn’t make a mistake, or you had to start over. Then, with whatever strength you had left, you slapped a lever on the left to get the carriage to return to a new line. 
So, the next time you see someone over 65, check out their fingers. If they have ape knuckles, thank them for their service.
