Hannah Kempfer, in 1936, and Beth Monke, who will portray Kempfer in an original drama on July 12, 2 p.m., in downtown Pelican Rapids. Hannah Kempfer represented the Pelican-Fergus Falls-Maplewood area as one of the stateโ€™s first woman legislators.
By a quirk of history, Beth Monke served the Tonseth Lutheran Church the past year as an interim pastorโ€”the rural Tonseth church is right in Kempferโ€™s โ€œhometownโ€ of Edwards. The two women have something of a connection, despite the span of nearly a century. Kempfer died in 1943, long before Monke was born. Kempfer is buried in the Tonseth Lutheran church cemetery.
