War monument dismantling sparks issue between VFW, contractor; Reclamation of parking lot is expense VFW will likely incur

This scattered pile of brick, on the corner of the Pelican Rapids VFW Club lot, remains after dismantling the local landmark—the Veterans Monument, which will be relocated and rebuilt in the Veterans Memorial Park. But in the meantime, the unfinished repairs to the brick pad became an issue between the contractor and at least one disgruntled VFW member.

Veteran Glenn Moerke, background, delivered a message at the Oktoberfest “Salute to the Troops” program Oct. 11 at the Pelican VFW Club. He included a brief history of the bugle in military service. Taps, the evening bugle call, and the morning bugle call, known as Reveille, were demonstrated. Reveille was originally sounded to muster the unit or for roll call, but as time passed it came to mark when the flag was raised in the morning.
