Abel "Abe" Barrera

Abe Barrera, 82, of rural Pelican Rapids, MN, died on September 11, 2024, at his home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at 2:00 pm at St. James UCC in Barnesville, MN, with Rev. John Werner presiding. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 20, from 5-8 pm at St. James UCC, with a prayer service at 7:00 pm, as well as one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Abel "Abe" Barrera, Jr., a man of great dedication and service, bid his final farewell on Sept. 11, 2024, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Born on November 6, 1941, in Alice, Texas, to Abel and Rose Barrera, Abe was a beacon of light in the lives of many.
Abe's journey through life was marked by his unwavering commitment to serving others. After graduating from school in Alice, Texas in 1960, Abe honorably served his country in the United States Air Force for an impressive 20 years, achieving the rank of Tech Sergeant. Stationed at numerous bases around the world including New Hampshire, Washington D.C., the Philippines, Vietnam, Germany, Newfoundland, Guam, Texas, Montana, and North Dakota, he demonstrated courage and loyalty in defense of his nation.
After retiring from the Air Force he embarked on a distinguished 20-year career with the United States Postal Service. His diligent work took him to various locations including Barnesville, Fargo, West Fargo, and Detroit Lakes before retiring in 2002. Retirement allowed him the free time to attend his grandchildren's activities and spend quality time with his loved ones.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Abe found joy and solace in various hobbies and interests. He had a passion for square dancing and could often be found twirling across the dance floor with grace and enthusiasm. In quieter moments, he could be found tinkering around in the garage or tending to his beautiful roses. He enjoyed watching TV and challenging himself with Sudoku puzzles, and was an active member of the local horse group. Abe's love for these majestic creatures knew no bounds. His days would often start with a warm cup of coffee shared with friends at Cenex.
Abe will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 55 years Cricket; sons: Joseph (Katie) and Jerry (Dawn) Barrera; grandchildren: Alicia (Dominic) Smith, Bryan (Stephanie) Barrera, Christian (Sasha) Barrera, Evelyn (John) Shelton, Carissa (Tanner) Valnes, and Ian Barrera; 5 great-grandchildren; siblings Minnie, Benito, Mary, Rosie, Arnold, and Virginia; sister-in-law Janet Anctil and brother-in-law Gordon Grant.
Abe was preceded in death by his grandmother Amada Barrera; parents; sister Juanita Ferrell; brothers Juan and infant Sam Barrera; and mother-in-
law Verna Grant.
The life of Abel "Abe" Barrera Jr. was one filled with kindness, dedication, and unwavering loyalty to both his country and his loved ones. His presence will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to have been touched by his warmth and generosity. May his soul rest in peace as we remember and celebrate a life well-lived.
