The Battle Lake and Pelican varsity teams joined together for a photo Sept. 12, as both combined efforts to raise funds for a Battle Lake student injured in an accident. Bradyn Roisum, 16, has connections to both communities.
Bradyn, a Battle Lake high school sophomore, has many connections to the Pelican Rapids school and community. Bradyn is the son of Brady Roisum (PRHS graduate ‘96) and Jennifer Roisum (Head Battle Lake VB coach), nephew to Lance & Jill Roisum (PR VB coach), cousin to Anna Roisum (PR VB player), cousin to Andon Roisum (PR student), and AAU teammate to Jack Welch (PR student).

The Pelican Rapids Vikings hosted Battle Lake September 19 to kick off Pelican’s homecoming week.
Pelican also had elementary autograph night and “Bucks for Bradyn,” a fundraiser for Battle Lake sophomore Bradyn Roisum, who was severely injured in an ATV accident in August.
It was a great night of volleyball and community working together with the community of Battle Lake to raise funds for a family in need, said Pelican Coach Heidi Isaman.
The Vikings have been struggling with starting strong and executing at the beginning of the game. Unfortunately, we struggled again with this last night and did not execute well to start our first set. We passed quite well tonight but gave the Battlers too many unearned points with our hitting errors. Then libero Morgan Korf got to the serving line and got a huge 8-point run with her very aggressive serving. This run got the Vikings into their more aggressive rhythm, and the Vikings won set 1 with a score of 25-17.
Set 2, the Vikings executed much better with middle hitter Anna Roisum and outside hitter Marie Backstrom putting the ball down with power.
Setter Ellie Welch did a great job getting our hitters the ball where they needed it, and Welch also had a big 8-point run herself at the serving line. The Vikings controlled set 2 with their aggressiveness and won with a score of 25-13.
Set 3 was a different story. The Battlers took their turn controlling the game, and they got their offense going.
The Vikings had some hesitation on the offensive end and made too many errors. We also hesitated a bit on the defensive side, and the Battlers took advantage of this hesitation. Senior Torie Jugovich came off the bench confidently and threw a 7-point run on the service line to get the Vikings back on track.
It was not our most aggressive set, but the Vikings fought back and won the set 26-24.
Overall, tonight was a great night of volleyball and community celebration! Thank you to everyone who contributed and showed support for the Roisum family. Your generosity was very appreciated by all!
Volleyball players support injured Battle Lake youth with Pelican ties
Thank you for attending tonight’s volleyball match between the Battle Lake Battlers and the Pelican Rapids Vikings. And thank you for supporting “Bucks for Bradyn.”
On Aug.31, Bradyn Roisum was involved in an ATV accident and was hospitalized at Sanford in Fargo. He has been diagnosed with a serious traumatic brain injury with additional broken bones. Since being extubated seven days ago, Bradyn has made small improvements every day, but it will be a very long road to recovery. The hope is to leave the hospital for a rehabilitation center by the end of September.
The outpouring of support and prayers from area communities has been amazing. On behalf of the Roisum and Gronner families we would like to say to say a huge thank to everyone.
