The lady Vikings hosted the Wolverines from Wadena-Deer Creek in a section 8AA matchup. Pelican Rapids triumphed with a tight, 38-35 score. 

“We battled the whole game and were able to start and finish the game strong to get the victory,” said coach Brain Korf.

Wadena-Deer Creek jumped out to a 4-0 lead, and then Ellie Welch scored the first basket for the Vikings to cut the lead to 4-2. Morgan Korf made two free-throws to tie the game at 4, and then Kelsey Isaman’s basket gave the Vikings a 6-4 lead five minutes into the game. 

Wadena-Deer Creek outscored the Vikings 16-8 for the remainder of the first half. 

At halftime, the Vikings were down 20-14.

Morgan Korf’s acrobatic over-the-shoulder shot put the Vikings up in the closing moments of the Jan. 24 clash with Wadena-Deer Creek. Korf netted 13 points to win the hard-fought contest.

Pelican Rapids started with the ball in the second half, and Welch scored the first two baskets in the second half for the Vikings to cut the lead to two points, 20-18. 

Midway through the second half, Anna Roisum’s basket tied the game at 29. Korf’s basket gave the Vikings their first lead since early in the first half, 31-29. 

With one minute remaining in regulation, the Vikings were down one 34-33. Wolverines made 1 of 2 free-throws to go up 35-33.

Korf went to the free-throw line to shoot two free-throws. Korf made the first free throw. On the second free throw, Isaman tipped the rebound off the missed free throw back to Korf, who then drove to the basket for a layup. The basket gave the Vikings a 36-35 lead.

Pelican Rapids stopped Wadena-Deer Creek on the next possession, and Korf was fouled up 36-35. Korf drained two free-throws to give the Vikings a 38-35 lead.

Pelican Rapids shot 31.8% from the field, while Wadena-Deer Creek shot 30.5%. At the free-throw line, the Vikings made 9 of 11 free throws, and Wolverines made 8 of 10.

Pelican Rapids turned the ball over 11 times in the game while forcing 13 Wadena-Deer Creek turnovers. 

Morgan Korf led the team in scoring with 13 points while Kelsey Isaman and Ellie Welch scored 10 and 9 points for the Vikings, respectively. Anna Roisum scored 4 points, and Hazel Haugrud added 2 points.

Pelican Rapids was outrebounded by Wadena-Deer Creek 32-28. Isaman led the Vikings in rebounding with 9 rebounds. Korf grabbed 6 rebounds, and Haugurd, Roisum, and Welch grabbed 4 rebounds each.

Welch led the team with 4 assists, and Haugrud and Korf dished out 2 assists each. Korf led the team with 3 steals, and Isaman had 2 steals.
