The Pelican Rapids girls basketball team traveled to Hawley Jan. 6 for a Heart O’ Lakes conference game. 

The Vikings lost to the Nuggets 54-34. 

 “We played very well in parts of the game and need to learn to play consistent on both ends of the court,” said coach Brian Korf.

Pelican Rapids jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Hawley. Six minutes into the game, the Vikings built their lead to 11-3. Then, the Nuggets went on a 8-2 run to cut the Viking lead to 13-11. 

The Vikings struggled offensively in the last eight minutes of the first half and Hawley went on a 19-2 run to end the half. 

In the second half, the Vikings added 19 second half points and gave up 24 second half points. 

Pelican Rapids shot 41% from the field and Hawley shot 43% from the field. Both teams were 3 for 5 from the free throw line.

Turnovers hurt Lady Vikes 

The Vikings had 18 turnovers and Hawley had 5 turnovers.

Morgan Korf led the Vikings with 9 points while Kelsey Isaman had 7 points and Hazel Haugrud had 6 points. Ellie Welch scored 4 points and Tori Stephenson, Sophia Paulson, Anna Roisum and Kia Nelson chipped in 2 points each. 

Isaman, Stephenson and Welch led the Vikings with 6 rebounds each. 

Home clash with Barnesville is Jan. 14 in Pelican 

This week, the Vikings host Barnesville on Tuesday night and then host Breckenridge on Friday night. Both games are Heart O’ Lakes conference games.
