Turnovers costly as Pelican falls 37-20

The Pelican Rapids girls basketball team opened up their season Nov. 30 with a non-conference matchup against the Menahga Braves.

In a defensive battle, the Vikings lost the home opener 37-20.

“We were pleased with our effort on the defensive end and will use this game to help us improve,” said coach Brian Korf.

Menahga scored the first basket of the game and then Kelsey Isaman answered with a basket for the Vikings. Both teams battled back and forth and the Vikings trailed by one point 11-10 at the ten minute mark of the first half.

“We did a nice job of attacking and finding the open person around the basket,” said coach Korf.

The Vikings struggled offensively in the first half and did not score the last eight minutes of the first half. At halftime, the Braves led 22-12.

In the second half, the Braves outscored the Vikings 15-8.

The Vikings had 21 turnovers while the Braves turned the ball over 6 times.

“We will work on taking care of the basketball as the season goes on. We need to improve this category quickly if we want to be in the game late in the second half,” said coach Korf.

Kelsey Isaman led the Vikings with 10 points while Tori Stephenson and Ellie Welch each scored 4 points. Zoe Kekaha added 2 points for the Vikings.

Morgan Korf led the Vikings with 4 assists. Isaman led the Vikings with 6 rebounds along with Welch and Stephenson who grabbed 5 rebounds each.

The Vikings shot 39% from the field and the Braves shot 37 %. The Vikings were 1 for 5 from the free throw line while the Braves were 7 for 14 at the free throw line.

“We had a lot of girls who were playing together for the first time. The girls will work hard to improve their offensive game to compete at a higher level,” said coach Korf.
