Soccer boys set new season goal record, with 74
Pelican Rapids lived up to their top seed position on Thursday with an impressive 8-0 win over Crookston in the Section 8A boys’ soccer quarterfinals at David Brown Field in Pelican Rapids.
The Vikings got off to a fast start with a goal in the eighth minute by Sidiq Farah off a rebound. Sebastian Centeno scored the next two goals on assists from Jesus Moreno and Mohamed Ahmed. Centeno then returned the favor to Ahmed to close out the first half scoring.
Yahir Diaz scored from Sidiq Farah early in the second half to give the home team a 5-0 lead. Farah then assisted on a goal by Jesus Moreno, setting him up with a beautiful crossing pass in front of the net. Ahmed scored unassisted and Moreno scored from Centeno to close out the day.
The Victory put the Vikings up against the Hillcrest Lutheran Comets in a Semi-final match-up on Saturday at Brown Field.
The early moments were tense as both squads had opportunities but it was the Vikings who eventually found the net with less than a minute remaining when Sebastian Centeno headed a ball into the net just as he was clattered into by the Comet goalkeeper.
In the second half, the Vikings’ offense came to life scoring on three counter-attacks in the first 10 minutes of the half to make the score 4-0, with goals coming from Yahir Diaz, Mohamed Ahmed and Jesus Moreno. The Comets didn’t give up the fight though and after two free kick goals, the team found themselves with little momentum and clinging to a 4-2 lead. However, with under five minutes to play, Sidiiq Farah found Yahir Diaz to make the score 5-2.
The Vikings notch two top results with their victory. The first being that the team broke their own record for most goals scored in a season with 74. And they also surpassed the 10 win mark for the first time in program history and sit with a record of 11-4-1.
The win catapults the Vikings into the Section Final where they will play St. Cloud Cathedral on Tuesday. Results were not available at time of printing.
