Pelican Rapids came up short against Hawley by a score of 11-5 on June 14.
The Orange Sox American Legion team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after McHale Korf reached on an error and moved over to third on a double by Carson McNeal. Logan Fahje then drove in Korf on an infield single to third. McNeal also came around to score after the throw to first got by the Hawley first baseman.
The Nuggets wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as they put up 4 runs in the bottom half of the inning on five singles and a Pelican error.
Weston Funk got the start for the Sox and pitched into the second inning allowing 6 earned runs before Peyton Blakeway came on in relief.
Hawley would push their lead to 7-2 before Pelican mounted a comeback. The Sox got one run back in the top half of the third inning when Fahje led the inning off with a walk and later came around to score on a Hawley error. McNeal started off the fourth inning with a double and would eventually score on a wild pitch. Fahje then reached on an error, stole second base, and would later score on a single off the bat of Cody Nord bringing the score to 7-5. Blakeway kept the game close pitching the next 4 innings allowing 3 unearned runs.
“Too many errors,” noted head coach Andy Johnson, “We pitched well all game but we gave Hawley six extra outs to work with and they took full advantage of it.”
Carson McNeal led the Orange Sox at the plate with two doubles. Brayden Ecker, Luke Sjolie, Cody Nord, and Logan Fahje all added singles in the contest.
The Pelican Legion team has the rest of the week off before traveling to Parkers Prairie next Monday for a doubleheader.
