The Pelican Rapids boys track and field team had a good showing at the Sub-section 30 meet. Competing on a very hot day the Vikings boys advanced 10 athletes in 8 events to the Section 8A meet giving them an opportunity to compete to qualify for the state meet. Athletes advanced to the section meet by placing in the top 4 of an individual event or top 2 relay. Additional athletes qualify for the section meet through a wildcard process comparing results against the other 3 sub-sections in the section.

Leading the way with an individual title was discus thrower Nick Haugrud. Haugrud won the event with a throw of 128′ 5″. Haugrud is also extending his season in the shot put where his throw of 37′ 10″ placed third.

Relay, hurdles great events for Pelican Rapids

The other championship performance for the boys was in the 4x200m relay. Carter Johnson, Hunter Williams, Jesus Moreno, and Sebastian Centeno earned their first place finish with a time of 1:34.95.

The 300m Hurdles race was an exciting race for Pelican Rapids as freshman Tristan Landberg and Anthony Checco de Souza are both advancing to the section meet. Tristan finished in second place with a time of 43.35 seconds which is a personal best and is also the fastest time by a freshman at PRHS. Anthony also ran a personal best time in the race finishing in fourth place with a time 47.95 seconds.

Sebastian Centeno is continuing his season in the 400m dash as he placed third with a time of 53.01 seconds.

Tactical maneuver aided Carter Johnson in vault

Carter Johnson is advancing to the section meet in the pole vault as a fifth place finisher through the wildcard system and as a result of a great coaching move by Coach Moe. Johnson was quite winded coming off of the 4×200 relay and couldn’t generate the speed he needed to clear the bar. After 2 misses at the current height coach Moe had him pass on his third attempt allowing him to move up to the next height with the remaining competitors. The pass allowed him to get some more recovery time. The rest time resulted in a much better approach at the next height which Johnson cleared relatively easily. Johnson went on to clear a personal best 9′ 7″ earning him the opportunity to compete at the section meet.

The Vikings 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay will also get the opportunity to compete at the Section 8A meet because of qualify through the wildcard process. In the 4x100m relay the team of Sam Moe, Tristan Landberg, Josh Urbano, and Daniel Diaz finished in 4th place with a season best time of 47.62 seconds. The 4x400m relay team also ran their best time of the year. Sam Moe, Jesus Moreno, Tristan Landberg, and Sebastian Centeno finished in 3:48.34 resulting in a third place finish.

Several personal bests

Once again, the team saw athletes posting personal bests throughout the day. The 200m dash had personal bests from Carter Johnson, Sam Moe and Yahir Diaz. Yahir also had a personal best in the 100m dash. Jesus Moreno had a personal best in the high jump. While these athletes weren’t able to advance to the next meet it’s always good to finish with your best performance of the year.

The section 8A meet will be held in Park Rapids where the top 2 finishers will advance to the State Track and Field meet.
