Pelican Rapids girls basketball team advanced to the section 8AA championship game with a victory over Barnesville 46-39 in overtime. 

“The girls did a nice job of making free-throws and keeping their composure during the game especially during overtime,” said coach Brian Korf.  

There were many lead changes throughout the first half. Going into halftime, the Vikings had a one point lead 19-18. 

At the end of regulation the game was tied at 35-35. 

Barnesville scored the first two points of OT and then the Vikings finished on an 11-2 run, making 9-of-10 free throws in the period. Anna Stephenson was 6-for-6 from the line and scored 8 of her 22 points in overtime.

“Free throws are big at this time of the season and the girls did a nice job of knocking down their free throws,” said Coach Korf.

Pelican Rapids went 12 for 15 (80%) from the free throw line while Barnesville was 3 for 8 (37%) from the free throw line. 

Barnesville out rebounded the Vikings 38-29. 

Stephenson led the Vikings with 22 points and Tollefson scored 15 points. Chloe Paulson had 5 points and Korf and Welch added 2 points each. 

Tollefson led the Vikings with 11 rebounds and Stephenson had 8 rebounds for the Vikings. Allie Haiby and Korf had 3 rebounds each and  Welch and Paulson grabbed 2 rebounds each. 

Stephenson led the Vikings with 4 assists and Tollefson dished out 3 assists. 

Lady Vikings break tie with intense overtime win over rival Barnesville

The Barnesville Trojan Girls came to Pelican Rapids Tuesday night to face the Vikings in a Section 8AA semi-final contest. Pelican had beaten Barnesville twice in the regular season.

This game was close and intense throughout the first half with Pelican leading at the break 19 to 18. The second half was more of the same and regulation play ended with the score tied at 35.

Anna Stephenson and the Vikings took control in OT. Anna was ‘cold blooded’ at the freethrow line with 6 consecutive. She totaled 9 for 11 at the line, and ended the night with 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Greta Tollefson had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Allie Haiby had 5 rebounds.

In a significant style difference tonight, the Barnesville offense seemed focused on individuals driving to the hoop, while Pelican looked for passing, position, and ball control.

When the final buzzer sounded, The score was: Pelican Rapids 46, Barnesville 39.

Pelican Rapids advanced to the March 25 Section championship game in Perham. Fergus Falls Otters soundly defeated Hawley 50-26, setting up a rematch of 2020—with another “David and Goliath” clash between the much larger Fergus and Pelican.
