The Pelican Rapids girls basketball team hosted the Nuggets from Hawley in a Heart O’ Lakes conference game Feb. 20.
The Vikings defeated the Nuggets 50-39.
“We did a nice job of not turning the ball over and did a nice job defensively,” said coach Brian Korf.
The Nuggets scored the first points of the game and then the Vikings went on a run to build a 10-8 lead. The Vikings continued to build on their lead until late in the first half. The Nuggets were able to close the lead to four points at halftime 25-21.
In the second half, the Vikings were able to build on their halftime lead behind the scoring of Anna Stephenson. Stephenson scored 15 of her 24 points in the second half.
The Vikings outscored the Nuggets in the second half 25—18. “We were pleased with our effort in both halves,” said coach Korf.
The Vikings had 17 free-throw attempts and made 14 of the 17 attempts (82.4%). “We did a nice job getting to the free throw line and making our free throws,” said Coach Korf.
Stephenson led the Vikings in scoring with 24 points while Greta Tollefson scored 9 and Chloe Paulson scored 6 points. Morgan Korf scored 5 points, Ellie Welch scored 4 points and Allie Haiby chipped in 2 points.
Tollefson led the Vikings with 10 rebounds and Stephenson and Welch grabbed 5 rebounds for the Vikings. The Vikings outrebounded the Nuggets 33-19. “We were pleased with our effort on rebounding tonight,” said coach Korf.
Stephenson led the Vikings with 6 assists and Korf and Welch dished out 4 assists.
This week, the Vikings travel to Thief River Falls in a non-conference game and then travel to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton on Friday night in a Heart O’ Lakes game.
