Nettestad flag display earns Nettestad Pelican VFW ‘Patriotic Citizen Honor’
Flying the flag is almost a reflex action for Mike Nettestad—like breathing. Nettestad’s flag display, including the landscaped flower garden beneath, is a familiar sight on Highway 108, as motorists drive east to the edge of town. The Pelican Post 5052 Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary has revived its special “Patriotic Citizen Award, which is presented on an occasional basis to property owners for appropriate U.S. flag displays in the greater Pelican Rapids area.
Mike and Sherri Nettestad are pictured here with VFW Auxiliary member Ruth Holmgren, left.
One of the most patriotic guys around, Air Force veteran Nettestad has been one of the organizers of the annual Pelican Rapids Memorial Day program—which was cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He is also director of the Pelican-based “Band of Faith,” which performs at area churches, community events, and is a standard for the annual Memorial Day observances.
The extended line-up of flags pictured here was taken at the Nettestad residence over the Memorial Day weekend.
If you know of a homeowner who has a distinctive flag display, you can nominate them by calling VFW Auxiliary member Ruth Holmgren at 218-849-2691.
