WOW!  What a WIN!!

Maddie Guler, tossing the winning shot.

The 2020 Pelican Rapids girls basketball team ended up with a two point victory over the Fergus Falls Otters March 6 at Concordia in Moorhead.

This was a hotly contested match-up  and low scoring from beginning to end. Fergus took their last lead, 13-11 in the first half. The rain drop threes did not come easy for them as the Vikings led 21-17 at halftime. I found myself thinking “wish this game was over” exactly as I had 51 years ago in a Vikings Boys battle with the Moorhead. (The Spuds never led in that game.)

Also at halftime, a reporter sitting next to me said, “After watching Fergus on Wednesday, I didn’t think anybody could handle their offense.”

The game tightened up in the second half, Pelican leading by as much as 8 points. Fergus Falls creeped up gradually, and through a series of events: 3 pointers, missed shots, and a foul, the score was tied 41-41 with 30 seconds left on the clock.

After a timeout, (14 tics left) the Otters attempted to go inside to Paige Pearson, but threw the ball away.

Now, here come the Vikings with 5.6 seconds left. The pass came in to Maddie Guler. She dribbled the length of the floor and just right of the free throw line put up a perfect bank shot at the buzzer, 43-41—-the final.

Teammaters Anna Stephenson and Greta Tollefson raise the Section trophy.

Pandemonium ensued.

Coach Korf ran across the floor and jumped up on the press table to the delight of the student section.

Greta Tollefson led the Vikings with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Anna Stephenson had 16 pts. Ellie Colbeck had 22 for the Otters. Fergus Falls finished a great season with 25 wins, and 5 losses, but Pelican Rapids Viking Girls are 29-0 and not done yet.

Undefeated Pelican Rapids will play 24-6 Waseca Wednesday night, Williams Arena at 8 p.m.

One last memory from 51 years ago, Pelican Rapids and Waseca were the only undefeated basketball teams in the state in 1969!

Viking players and fans: Go make some more memories!

GOOD LUCK GIRLS!!!
