Former colleagues, coaches Korf, Strand find themselves squaring off on basketball court
The rich history of Pelican Rapids basketball was in full focus March 6—on both benches.
The widely anticipated showdown between the Pelican Rapids Lady Vikings and the Fergus Falls Otters girls basketball teams also placed former Pelican school colleagues against one another. Pictured, Coach Brian Korf and Fergus Falls Coach Brad Strand, chatting prior to the game on the Concordia Memorial Auditorium floor. Coach Korf was a Pelican basketball player and state tourney participant himself, pictured in a news photo from 1993, when the Pelican boys won the Section title.
Coach Strand led the Pelican boys to the Minnesota State Championship in 2009, but later moved to Fergus Falls, accepting the Otters girls coaching position.
Coach Korf is pictured here on Friday night, running toward the pile-up of players and fans that occurred on the Concordia court, after a two point shot from Maddie Guler won the game in the final couple of seconds.
The Section 8AA championship–over his former coach and colleague’s team–earned Korf the Section “Coach of the Year” honor for 2020.
Also pictured, during National Anthem opening, is the Lady Viking coach team, from left, Korf, Cody Shaffer, Amanda Belz and Lance Roisum.
Roisum is also a part of Pelican basketball history, as a player in the mid-1990s. In fact, Lance and his twin brother Brady were co-All Conference MVPs in 1996.
