On January 28 the Pelican Rapids Vikings matmen put a scare into the seventh ranked Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale-Parkers Prairie Raiders.

At one point the Vikings were down by 14 points.

The scrappy Vikings then won five of the next seven matches to be within one point 25-24.

Wrestler of the Meet was Jed Carlson.

“Even though he did not wrestle he told the coaches that we should only wrestle 12 weight classes so the score would be closer.  He gave up his chance to wrestle so that the score could be up to six points closer if he lost,” stated Coach Holt.  “He was a real team player.”

 Vikes grapple past Staples

In the second match of the night the Vikings handled the Staples-Motley Cardinals by defeating them 54-18.  The Vikings won six of the nine matches by pins and three by forfeit.   This was the first victory over Staples in about 10 years.

These two matches were important for the Vikings as they prepare for the Section team completion.   With the win over Staples the team remains in fourth place in the section and could host a Section Dual Team Tournament on Feb.11.

Pelican performs well at Lake Park meet

On Friday, Jan. 31 the Vikings competed in the rescheduled 43rd Terry Teiken Tournament in Lake Park.  They were able to finish in fifth place with 114 points.

The team was able to fill 12 of the 14 weight classes and placed in 11 of them.

This tournament has been one of their favorites over the years and Pelican has traditionally done very well.

The Vikings had five wrestlers in the finals, Sebastian Centeno at 138, Matty Ziebell at 152, Max Dykhoff at 160, Johnny Ziebell at 170, and Jacob Willits at 285.  Earning first place metals were Jacob Willits and Matty Ziebell.

Two regular varsity members Daniel Diaz at 113 and Troy Bell at 145 were unable to compete because of receiving a concussion.  It is hoped that these two along with Julian Diaz, who also had a concussion, will be able to complete the state mandated concussion protocol so they can compete in the Morris tournament on Feb. 8 and if not Feb. 11 for the Section Team Tournament.

Vikings competitive at tough Fertile meet

On Feb. 1 the Viking traveled to Fertile to wrestle in a very tough Northwest Wrestling tournament.

There were 11 ranked individuals, two from North Dakota, four from class AA in Minnesota and five from Class A in Minnesota.

Pelican’s Matty Ziebell is ranked eighth at 160. Winner Bemidji is listed as Lean & Mean in the Minnesota Class AAA.

Of the 12 Vikings, nine of them placed.  The Ziebell brothers, Matty and Johnny were the lone Vikings in the finals.  At 152 Matty lost in the tie breaker 8-7.  If the score is tied after three periods there is a 30 second period from the neutral position with the first point scored winning.  If there still is not winner there are two more 30 second periods from the referee’s position with the wrestler with the most points winning.

Johnny Ziebell at 170 lost to third ranked Kolbe Booker from All Saints Home School by decision 6-2.

“Booker is a very good wrestler on his feet who likes to use freestyle throws to take his opponents down, earn back points and pin his opponent,” stated Coach Holt. “We reminded him how to defend this and Johnny was successful. Even though he was taken down he did not give up any back points from them.”

Jacob Willits, who wrestled at 285 in the last two tournaments, had only lost once and finished third. He and the coaches wanted him to wrestle some matches at this weight to see if he should go 220 or 285 in sections.  By doing so, they hope to determine where he should wrestle at sections and place higher and earning a trip to state.
