Core of juniors, seniors to pave way for Pelican hoop squad
Coaching, assistant staff this season:
John Gullingsrud – Head Coach
Adam Johnson- JV
Derrick Nelson- C squad
Doug Bruggeman- Junior High
Ryan Syverson- Junior High
How does your team compare to last year’s squad?
We return a good nucleus of players from last year’s team and we are expecting those players to set the tone for our program this season. We have a nice mix of perimeter and inside play and should be able to score in a variety of ways offensively as we look to push the ball and play an up tempo style of basketball.
How many returning players do you have, and who are they?
McHale Korf- junior guard (12.9 ppg, 5.6 apg, 3.7 rpg, HOL all-conference)
Jayden Rutherford- junior guard (11.1 ppg, 2.1 apg)
Logan Fahje- junior forward (8.9 ppg, 2.6 apg, 3.4 rpg)
Liam Sytsma- junior forward (4.1 ppg, 3.8 rpg)
Logan Petznick- senior guard
Kirby Nelson- senior forward
David Johnston- senior guard
Justin VerDorn- junior guard
Weston Funk- junior guard
What are some aspects you need to work on the most to prepare for the 2019-2020 season?
Rebounding and defense are the two main areas we are going to need to improve in order to compete with the top teams in our conference and section. We had moments last season where we were pretty solid defensively, but we need to be more consistent on that end.
General comments on the strengths, challenges.
We have a hard working group of kids that are also coachable and want to improve individually and as a team, which is always a great starting point for the upcoming season. We had some sophomores gain significant experience at the varsity level last season which we hope benefits us this season. The coaches and players are excited to get another season of Vikings basketball started!
What are the teams to beat this year in the conference, and also in section?
HOL Conference: Perham, Breckenridge, DGF
Section 8AA: Perham, Breckenridge, DGF, Fergus Falls, East Grand Forks
