The Pelican Rapids girls basketball team traveled to Park Rapids on Friday night in a non-conference game to kick off the 2019-20 basketball season. The Lady Vikings defeated the Panthers 84-47. “It was nice to start the season with a victory,” said Coach Brian Korf.
The Vikings jumped out to a 12-4 run to start the game. Forcing six turnovers in the first six minutes of the game helped the Vikings gain an early lead. “We did a nice job of pressuring them and creating turnovers which helped us get a lead right away,” said Coach Korf.
In the first half, the Vikings forced 14 Panther turnovers and made 12 of 14 free throws while the Vikings turned the ball over 7 times. At halftime, the Vikings led 46-29. “We gave up a few fast break layups so we will work hard to improve our transition defense,” commented Coach Korf.
In the second half, the Vikings outscored the Panthers 38-18.
The Vikings outrebounded the Panthers 35-27. Ryley Paulson and Anna Stephenson led the Vikings with 6 rebounds each while Maddie Guler grabbed 3 rebounds. Greta Tollefson and Karina Torres had 3 rebounds each.
