Fake punts, trick plays add to exciting win over Frazee, in front of large hometown crowd

The Pelican Rapids Vikings were in a high scoring game for the second week in a row. This time the Vikings came out on top securing the 2019 Homecoming win.

Pelican Rapids took advantage of two big plays allowing them to get the win. The first one occurred midway through the second quarter. Trailing 14-6 and facing a 4th and 23 from about midfield the Vikings rolled the dice with a fake punt.

Logan Fahje received a pass from McHale Korf and showed some good open field running skills as he not only got enough yards for the first down he got the Vikings inside the Frazee 10 yard line.

A few plays later McHale Korf finished off the drive with a rushing touchdown and Matty Ziebell ran in the two point conversion bringing the game to a 14 all tie at the end of the first half.

The other big play in the Vikings’ favor took place on the opening kick off of the second half.

Pelican received the kick and Jayden Rutherford put together a 73 yard touchdown return.

The two point conversion run by McHale Korf was successful and the home team had a 22-14 lead. Those two big plays gave us a real emotional boost. The fake punt was especially big as it gave us the opportunity to get on the scoreboard at a time when we were struggling to string together good plays on both sides of the ball.

Later in the third quarter Pelican Rapids got into the endzone again on a short run by McHale Korf. The two point conversion pass to Logan Fahje was good and the Vikings built the lead to 30-14. The teams traded touchdowns after that as the Vikings held on for the win.

The game got off to a difficult start for Pelican Rapids.

The first two plays of the game were defensive off sides penalties on Pelican and an opening game drive that resulted in a touchdown for the Frazee Hornets and and early 6-0 lead. The Vikings responded right away putting together a scoring drive of their own. A five yard run by Korf and a two point conversion run by Korf gave Pelican its first lead of the game at 8-6.

Frazee responded and put together a quick scoring drive to regain the lead at 14-6. After that the defenses for both teams settled in some in the second quarter, each forced punting situations for the opponent. It was the second punting situation that Pelican ran the fake that changed the tone of the game.

Matty Ziebell had a strong game offensively for the Vikings as he rushed for 75 yards and two fourth quarter touchdowns. After Ziebell’s first touchdown the Vikings used a trick play on the two point conversion as running back Johnny Ziebell took a handoff and threw to quarterback Korf for the successful conversion. After the last touchdown for Pelican Rapids they used a kick by Korf for a 1 point conversion.

Frazee scored again after the last Pelican touchdown to pull within 9 points but couldn’t draw any closer. The Hornets last possession ended with an interception by Vikings defensive back Alex Lynnes.

“We had too many penalties in this game and will need to improve in that area of the game. Defensively we played really well at times but will need to play more consistently on that side of the ball. Obviously were pleased with the win and it feels really good after dropping the last two games,” said Coach Haugen.

Next Friday the Vikings go on the road again to face the Hawley Nuggets.
