Pelican to clash with rival Fergus Falls Aug. 3, 5 p.m. at home diamond
A weekend full of baseball was featured at the Chauncey Martin Field, as Pelican Rapids hosted the Region 16C amateur baseball tourney.
The hometown team won a pair, as the Pelican Rapids Lakers won Saturday and Sunday, sending them to a contest with Fergus Falls. The Lakers will square off on Saturday night, August 3, 5 p.m., against Fergus Falls.
Meanwhile, Vergas won in the first round 9-3, but dropped its second contest–shut out by Osakis, 12-0.
Against Kensington, the Lakers prevented a runner from crossing the plate Friday, July 26.
Nathan Sillerud and Logan Riedel got the Lakers started early with singles. Alex Johnson reach on an error and Austin Martz cleared the bases with a 2 out double.
Drew Thompson and Kyle Mittendorf scored in the bottom of the 2nd to extend the Lakers lead to 5-0 and that would be all the hometown needed to win the first round. Drew Thompson was on the mound for the Lakers, holding the Norseman scoreless and striking out 6.
In Sunday action, July 28, Urbank jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a single by the leadoff hitter Levi Arnold, a wild pitch and a single by Hunter Arnold.
The Laker bats were aggressive, totaling up 15 hits against the Bombers pitching staff and scoring 8 runs.
Dana Johnson tied the game in the top of the 4 with a solo home run. Alex Johnson led off with a double followed by a Logan Knorr single.
Taylor Fuchs bunted for hit with a throwing error on the 3rd baseman which allowed Johnson and Knorr to score.
Adam Johnson would then bring Fuchs home with a home run of his own. Nathan Sillerud scored in the 6th thanks to an Alex Johnson single. The Lakers added 2 insurance runs in the top of the 9th with Adam and Dana Johnson scoring on an Austin Martz single.
The tournament continues this next weekend with 4 games slated for Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
The home town Lakers will take on Fergus Falls at 5 p.m.
The Fergus Falls Hurricanes won their opening game in the Region 16C Tournament on Sunday, beating Long Prairie by the score of 5-4 in Pelican Rapids.
