Basketball passion on display in Pelican Rapids June 7-9

If you have a relgious passion for basketball, Pelican Rapids is the “holy land” June 7-9.

The Shada 3-on-3 basketball tournament will mark the 26th year of the legendary event.

Another bumper crop of teams will roll into Pelican Rapids this weekend for the 26th Shada 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament.

Highlighting the weekend is a 22 team College division that will have some of the best D2 talent in the nation playing on Saturday and Sunday, sprinkled with a couple of Division 1 players.  If you are a hoops fan it would be worth your time to come in from 12:00 to 6:00 on both Saturday and Sunday to watch these elite athletes play.

The tourney also has a strong post high men’s division with 34 teams coming in on Saturday and Sunday looking to show the area that they’ve still “got what it takes.”

“We have a number of teams, in the post high men’s division that requested to be squared off against each other each year as bragging rights go a long way at the Shada!”  explained Shada director Doug Bruggeman.

June “madness” in Pelican

If you want to see the definition of Hoops Madness it is not in the month of March but on a Friday in June.

There will be almost 150 elementary teams in grades 3 through 6 coming into Pelican Rapids on June 7 and the gyms are just hopping with action.

“Friday is an unbelievable day of basketball for these young kids as the environment is off the charts with energy and effort,” noted  Bruggeman.

Shada a “labor of pride”

Bruggeman, who founded the tournament with fellow coach Dave Rund back in 1994, calls running this event a “labor of pride.”

“Right now, what is driving me to keep this tournament rolling has a lot to do with Dave’s boys and my sons,” commented Bruggeman. Both Casey and Ryan along with Austin and Nathan Rund, (self-named “sons of Shada”) really have brought the tournament to a new level as the tournament has soared to over 270 the last 3 years.

“The new facilities has definitely helped us create an elite feel to the tournament but the “sons” have done a great job of selling this event to their friends,” stated Bruggeman.

Action starts first thing Friday

You may not make it into the gym this coming weekend but you will sense the excitement of 3 on 3 hoops in Pelican Rapids as the town will be bustling with players and fans come Friday morning at 7:30 a.m.
