Isaac Olson threw middle relief in the Viking JV’s extra inning, 6-5 win over Hawley May 3

The Pelican JV split a double header with Barnesville on Thursday, winning the first game in an extra inning 4-3 and losing the 2nd one 1-0.

Johnny Ziebel had a solid game for the young Vikings with 2 hits, a single and a triple. Cody Nord, Jacob Willits, Alex Lynnes and Mark LaPoint each had singles.  Austin Stoll started on the mound for Pelican, going the first 3 innings. Justin Verdorn pitched the final 3, getting the win.  The Vikings had the lead 3-2 going into the top of the 5 inning game but after retiring the first 2 hitters, a walk, a stolen base and a single tied the game. Pelican did not score in the bottom of the frame, sending the game into extra innings. With one out, Stoll walked, stole 2nd and advance to 3rd on a ground out. Ziebel’s grounder was misplayed with Stoll scoring the winning run.

In the 2nd game, the Vikings couldn’t get much going with their bats as they managed only 2 hits, singles by Justin Verdorn and Alex Lynnes.

Johnny Ziebel pitched the complete game for Pelican and allowed only one hit.  Barnesville scored the lone run of the game in the 1st inning on 2 walks and a passed ball. (9 Innings)

In their 2nd extra inning game in 2 days, the Vikings scored the winning run on Jacob Willits’ walk off single in the bottom of the 9th.

The game was tied 2-2 going into the 7th inning when the Nuggets scored 2 on a walk, an infield error and a base hit.  Pelican came back in the bottom of the inning, tying the game after walks to Austin Stoll and Justin Verdorn with both scoring when Johnny Ziebel’s grounder was misplayed.  With no outs, the Vikings had a good opportunity to win the game at this point after Ziebel stole 2nd but the next 3 hitters failed to bring him in.  There was no scoring in  the 8th but the Nuggets pushed across a run in the top of the 9th without the benefit of a hit, setting the stage for another Pelican comeback.  Verdorn led off with a walk, stole 2nd and scored on Ziebel’s single.  Ziebel was able to reach 3rd when the ball got by the Hawley outfielder.  Jacob Willits then delivered the walk off single to score Ziebel.

Pelican used 4 pitchers, Alex Lynnes, Isaac Olson, Estaban Garza and Verdorn, who got the win, his 2nd in 2 days.  Zack Partlow and Jack Paulson did the catching. Cody Nord, Lynnes, Olson and Mark LaPoint got the other Pelican hits, all singles.

“The JV is starting to play better, cutting down on the strikeouts and having better at bats. They showed a lot of resiliency this past week with 2 extra inning games back to back.  We had to use a lot of pitchers and I thought they responded well,” noted Coach Steve Babb.
