The Pelican Rapids boys basketball team’s season came to an end last Thursday night, March 7, in Twin Valley as the Norman County East-Ulen-Hitterdahl Titans defeated the Vikings 71-56 in the quarterfinals of the north subsection 6A playoffs.
The Titans held a slim 26-25 lead at the half as the two teams battled back and forth. NCE-UH took control in the second half with ten minutes left in the game as they built a double digit lead that the Vikings could not cut into down the stretch.
Pelican Rapids ends their season at 10-17 overall.
“The Titans are a tall and athletic team that presents many matchup problems for us and their length really showed on the glass tonight as they dominated us in that category outrebounding us 49-26,” head coach John Gullingsrud said. “Twenty-one of their rebounds came on the offensive end which obviously hurt us as you can’t give good teams multiple shots at the basket on their possessions. We battled hard, but just didn’t do the little things well enough to come away with the upset on the road.”
The Vikings were led offensively by Hayden Christenson and McHale Korf, who both had 14 points. Korf also led the team with 4 steals, while Eli Sytsma had a team high 6 rebounds and 4 assists and Logan Fahje also had 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
Pelican Rapids shot 21-53 (40%) from the field and made 6-20 (30%) of their threes. Both teams had 21 turnovers.
“It is always tough when the season comes to an end, but we simply did not play well enough tonight to give ourselves a chance to win the game,” coach Gullingsrud stated. “We had four seniors play their last game in a Vikings uniform and we will definitely miss the contributions of Damien Britten, Hayden Christenson, Reggie Funk, and Eli Sytsma. They are all great young men that we have had the pleasure to coach and we would like to thank them for their efforts and all they have done for our program.”
