Galaxy Resort on Star Lake will become Bell Resort and Bar and Grill, when new owners take the helm in 2019.
Rhonda Bell hopes to re-open New Year’s Eve, following the acquisition from Ron Bina, who has owned and operated the establishment since 1980.
“We’re really excited about this new venture,” said Rhonda, who will be the on-site manager of the operation.
Her father, Roland Bell, Oxford, Mississippi, bought the restaurant, and closed the transaction with the Binas in early December.
Roland’s background is in rental properties, said Rhonda.
“We were looking for something to invest in, and I love Otter Tail County,” said Rhonda, who has worked in a number of hospitality-related businesses–including Thumper Pond in Ottertail, as well as establishments in Wadena and Moorhead. “I fell in love with the people and the lakes. We thought this was a perfect fit.”
The Bells first looked at the Galaxy operation a year ago, said Rhonda, 32, who has worked in restaurant and food service since she was 16. She is from Verndale, and a graduate of Verndale High School.
Their plans are to continue to run it as a family resort, with little or no changes the first year.
For the restaurant, they will be interviewing cooks, and will likely revise the menu. One menu item they won’t change: The famous Galaxy broasted chicken. “Everybody I’ve talked to said “don’t get rid of the chicken,” said Rhonda.
The resort is for the most part a warm-season operation, but she expects to continue the restaurant as a year-round establishment. Likely hours at the restaurant and bar will be Thursday to Sunday in the off-season, and six days a week during the summer.
In the future, Bell would like to add entertainment. Also, she would like to focus on winter activities–such as ice fishing and snowmobile events.
