Viking defense halts Roseau 14-8
Pelican Rapids Homecoming 2018 was played on a cool dreary night. The Vikings weren’t impacted by the conditions as they put together another strong effort earning their third win of the season.
The game started as a defensive struggle with neither team putting together much offense in the first quarter. However, the Vikings offense started coming alive late in the quarter.
The offensive momentum carried over into the second quarter. On the Vikings’ second possession of the quarter they put together a 6 play touchdown drive. All 49 yards of the drive came on the ground with Damien Britten responsible for 26 of them and McHale Korf covering the final 6 for the first score of the game with key blocks coming from Eli Sytsma and Zane Brosowske.
The PAT conversion was a successful pass from Korf to Eli Sytsma and Pelican Rapids had an 8-0 lead.
An inspired Vikings defense continued to play well after the touchdown and got the ball back after just 3 Roseau offensive plays and a punt. The offense picked up right where it left off, but incorporated a couple of key pass plays to score on their second possession in a row. Pelican Rapids picked up 31 yards on a pass from Korf to Hayden Christenson and another 15 yards on a completion to Johnny Ziebell. Damien Britten finished the drive with a 15 yard touchdown run. The PAT kick missed just wide and the Vikings lead was 14-0.
Midway through the second quarter Pelican Rapids would score their last points of the game. The Vikings put together a couple of good drives in the second half but weren’t able to score. However, the Vikings defense continued to play well and would be counted on to uphold the 14 point lead.
Roseau got into the endzone late in the third quarter and with a successful 2 point conversion cut the Vikings lead to 14-8.
Led by a strong game from inside linebacker Matty Ziebell the defense was up to the challenge and didn’t give up any more points. Roseau was pinned deep in their own territory but got to midfield with a 42 yard run. That drive ended when the Vikings defense stuffed a fourth down run for no gain.
Pelican Rapids offense took over, picked up one first down and then ran out the clock for a hard earned homecoming victory.
“I really felt we came out focused and ready to play. A week ago Roseau had gone toe to toe in a tough loss to a very good Barnesville team so we knew they would be a difficult challenge,” said Coach Dave Haugen. “Our team has shown some really good growth the last few weeks and was well prepared and ready to play. We showed really good composure in the fourth quarter making the plays we needed to in order to get the win.”
Next week Pelican Rapids, 3-3 will travel to Crookston for a matchup with the 2-4 Pirates.
