Busy on the basepaths Lady Vikes top Park Rapids tourney with 23-15 win

0The Lady Vikings softball team capped a five game week of action with a 23-15 win over Ada-Borup-Norman West.
The win topped off a road trip north–to the Park Rapids invitational tournament on April 22.
Earlier in the week, the Pelican Rapids girls dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Breckenridge-Wahpeton, 20-0 and 14-7.
Pelican wins high-scoring melee against Ada, 23-15
The Lady Vikings took the lead for good against Ada in the fourth inning to win the back and forth game at the Park Rapids tourney–in a high scoring, 38-run affair. Pelican put nearly two dozen runners across the plate, winning 23-15.
The Vikings trailed 14-13 in the bottom of the fourth, when Natalie Williams singled to drive in a pair of runs. The Vikings launched a 12 run assault in the bottom of the fourth to seal the victory, and returned with five runs in the fifth.
Hailey Peterson led Pelican with 4 rbis in the contest. She drove in the runs on a walk in the first, a groundout in the fourth and a double in the fifth.
Sarah Thompson earned the win for the Vikings, throwing three innings. She gave up eight runs on seven hits and struck out three. Taylor Berndt started on the mound for Pelican, throwing two innings and giving up six runs on two hits; and striking out four.
Allie Haiby, Taylor Berndt and Thompson each collected multiple hits for Pelican Rapids. Haiby and Peterson both knocked in four runs.
On the basepaths, the Vikings stole seven–with Peterson stealing three herself.
Pelican played Mahnomen to 3-3 tie–until fifth inning
In the second game of the Park Rapids tourney, Pelican stayed in the game until the end. Mahnomen went ahead on a home run in the top of the fifth–breaking a 3-3 tie.
Pelican collected a total of 12 hits, despite the 11-4 loss to Mahnomen.
Natalie Williams, Shelby Schermerhorn and Claire Strand each collected multiple hits. Williams had a 4-for-4 game at the plate to lead Pelican in hits.
Mahnomen collected 17 hits.
Crookston out-hit Pelican in the first contest of the three game tournament, defeating the Vikings by a 16-5 score.
