The Pelican Rapids Boys Track and Field team was back in action as they competed in the Barnesville Early Bird Invitational.

Donovan Young claimed the first event win of the season for the Vikings. With a time of 11.23 seconds, Young captured the win in the 100m dash.

Just behind was teammate Carlan Haugrud finishing in second place with a time of 11.30 seconds.

“Those are both really good times at this early point of the season. It’s going to be a lot of fun to watch them battle against each other and the rest of the field as the season progresses,” said Coach Dave Haugen.

The Vikings also scored points on the track in the 4x400m relay.  Matt Hanson, Eli Sytsma, Carson Haugrud and Carlan Haugrud teamed up for a second place finish with a time of 3:46.5.

“I was very pleased with how well they ran.  I honestly didn’t think we were going to be that fast at this time of the season,” said Coach Haugen. “All four of the guys had their training interrupted with the band trip so I was surprised, and encouraged, by their fitness level.”

Pelican Rapids also picked up points in two field events.  Carson Haugrud claimed fourth place in the Discus with a personal best throw of 106’ 2.  Eli Sytsma cleared 5’ 4 in the high jump and finished in 6th place.

“It felt good to be competing at close to full strength now that the band is back from their trip and has had some practice time again,” said Haugen. “A couple of guys were held out of competition due to injury, preventing us from being able to get a look at everyone.  The performances in Barnesville were very encouraging and maybe a little better than expected.  The nice weather for the meet helped, but a lot of credit goes to guys being willing to compete and also put in good work on some limited practice time.”
