In the last regular season dual of the 2016-17 season the Pelican Rapids High School Vikings wrestling team traveled to Breckenridge on Feb. 9.

In what was a very exciting dual, the Vikings lost 37-34.

This was a much better showing then in January when they lost 54-26. In that match Pelican gave up 30 points because of five forfeits.

With all the weights filled the score was tied 33-33 going into the last match.

“Several younger wrestlers were asked to fill in the weights for us tonight and they gave it their all.  We have seen constant improvement this year and are proud of all the wrestlers,” said co-head Coach Holt.

Pelican wrestlers travel to Morris 

In their last regular season tournament of the year before the Section 6A tournament, scheduled Feb. 25,  the Vikings traveled to Morris this Feb. 11.

The coaches were very pleased to see all the wrestlers place.  The tournament was won by fourth ranked in class A, West Central, with 249.5. Followed by sixth ranked in class A Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg with 197.5

Haugrud wins 60th wrestling victory 

A personal highlight for Carson Haugrud was earning his 60th Varsity win against Elijah Cloos of Ortonville.

He is the 45th wrestler in Pelican wrestling history to reach this mark.  His season record is 27-9 with 21 pins this season.

The stomach flu continues to hit the wrestling team.  On Saturday Johnny and Matt Ziebell and Armando Diaz were all home with the flu.  With Section tournament coming up the coaches hope that the wrestlers will be healthy.
