The Pelican Rapids boys basketball team dropped their fifth conference game as they were defeated by the Hawley Nuggets 74-61 January 26.
The Vikings held a slim 27-26 lead over the Nuggets at the half after Oakley Kress hit a three pointer with six seconds left. The score was knotted up at 36 when Hawley went on a 9-0 run that the Vikings could not recover from.
“It was a back and forth game until Hawley went on that small run which was actually part of a bigger 29-10 run that they had,” stated head coach John Gullingsrud. “We had numerous possessions on offense during that stretch where we had some opportunities, we just were not able to convert and keep the game close. When you combine that with the second chance baskets and open looks we gave up defensively, it was just too big of a deficit for us to come back from.”
The loss puts Pelican Rapids at 4-12 overall on the season and 1-5 in Heart O’ Lakes play.
Pelican Rapids was once again led offensively by Oakley Kress, as he had 23 points and 4 assists. Jacob Gottenborg was also in double figures with 10, and Dillon Such chipped in 6 points and a team high 4 rebounds. As a team, the Vikings shot 24-58 (41%) from the field and 7-20 (35%) on threes.
Hawley outrebounded Pelican Rapids 36-28.
“This was another game of many this season that we felt like we definitely had our chances at, but we didn’t execute on either end of the floor well enough during pressure situations,” Coach Gullingsrud commented. “We played pretty well defensively in the first half, but we certainly did not in the second half as we gave up 48 points to the Nuggets. We are just not playing solid team defense consistently right now, and we need to be able to do that in order to win games in our conference.”
