Torres leads Pelican with 21 points

The Pelican Rapids girls basketball team snapped a three game losing skid with a 51-38 win in a Heart O’ Lakes Conference game in Hawley.

“The girls played hard and came out strong right away,” said coach Brian Korf.

The Vikings jumped out to 8-0 lead and never looked back as the Nuggets struggled to handle the Vikings full court pressure.  “Maddie Guler caused a lot of turnovers with her on-ball defense with which she has done a great job all season,” said Coach Korf.

Going into halftime, the Vikings had a 32-17 lead.

“We were very pleased with our offense in the first half and holding them to 17 points,” said Coach Korf.

The Vikings offense slowed down in the second half by adding only 19 second half points.  The Nuggets went to a zone offense and the Vikings struggled to score in the second half.

Both teams shot 44% from the field but the Nuggets turned the ball over 26 times and Vikings turned it over 19 times.

Adriana Torres led the Vikings with 21 points while  Greta Tollefson added 9 points for the Vikings and Kaylie Isaman chipped in with seven points.

Sarah Thompson scored 6 points, Morgan Berg had 4 points and Maddie Guler and Rachel Gottenborg had 2 points each. Torres grabbed 6 rebounds and  Gottenborg and Guler each pulled down four rebounds in the game to lead the Vikings.
