Valkyries dance group host invitational with a dozen squads coming from throughout state
“Flurries” are in the forecast for Pelican Rapids this weekend.
Dance “Flurries” that is, as the Pelican Rapids High School Valkyries competitive dance team hosts the annual invitational dance meet.
“Flurries” is the title of the event, which will attract a dozen squads from all over the state.
Teams register beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the gym and activities complex on the Pelican high school campus. Dance performances start at 11 a.m.
Dance Coach Emily Evenson reported on the Valkyries season to date.
The Pelican dancers competed for the first time this season on December 3 in Detroit Lakes and have competed seven times since.
The dancers also performed half-time at the home boys basketball game Jan. 12.
The Valkyries are part of Section 4A which is proving to be one of the toughest sections in the state this year, noted Coach Evenson.
Aitkin and Frazee have been leading the section in both jazz and kick while Crosby-Ironton, Bagley, and Pelican continue to score closely in kick.
In the jazz category, Pelican has very tough competition that also includes Crosby-Ironton, DGF, and Duluth Marshall.
“Our strengths in both kick and jazz this season come mainly from strong and difficult choreography that make for fun routines to watch,” said Evenson. “We continue to work on strengthening our turn, leap, and jump technique as that is our weaker area this season in jazz. In kick, we continue to work on the execution of our routine as well as kick height.”
The home meet Jan. 21 should be a great meet as it is the last time Pelican will face Crosby-Ironton and Duluth Marshall before the section meet on February 4 in Wadena.
