The Pelican Rapids Boys Basketball team hosted Heart O’ Lakes Conference  rival Barnesville January 12.

The Trojans jumped out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back from there as they led at the half 38-25 and went on to post a 70-64 win over the Vikings.

The loss dropped Pelican Rapids to 3-8 overall and 1-3 in the Heart O’ Lakes conference.

“It was a disappointing effort from our guys as we allowed Barnesville to set the tone early on in the game as the more aggressive and physical team,” stated head coach John Gullingsrud. “We allowed them too many open looks on the offensive end and when they did miss, they would often grab an offensive rebound to keep their possession going. We seemed to be a step slow on the defensive end all night.”

Pelican Rapids was led by the 24 points and 8 rebounds of Jacob Gottenborg, while Hayden Christenson came off the bench to score 10.

Oakley Kress chipped in 8 points as well.

As a team, the Vikings shot 26-61 (43%) from the field, but only made 6-22 (27%) threes and 6-12 (50%) free throws. Barnesville outrebounded the Vikings 41-34 with 14 of those coming on the offensive end.

“Jacob continued his recent strong play on both ends of the court and we received a great spark off of the bench from Hayden,” said Coach Gullingsrud. “We just didn’t come prepared to play at the intensity level that Barnesville did that night. We did do a nice job of battling back in the second half after being down by so much in the first half, but we were not able to get any closer than the final score.”
