The Pelican Rapids boys basketball team had their fifth straight road game to start the 2016-17 season at Breckenridge December 22.

The Cowboys dominated the start of the game as they built a lead as big as 31 in the first half and led 50-27 at the half.

There would be no second half miracles in this game as Breckenridge maintained their lead and went on to win 95-65. The loss puts the Vikings at 2-3 for the season and 1-1 in Heart O’ Lakes play.

“We were not prepared for the pace and physicality that Breckenridge plays at,” commented head coach John Gullingsrud. “They set the tone in the first couple of possessions of the game and we were never able to adjust to the speed and intensity that they bring to the floor. We turned it over numerous times, which they would quickly convert into layups on their offensive end. We struggled to get any good looks offensively against their pressure defense.”

Zack Sjolie led Pelican Rapids with 10 points off the bench, while Oakley Kress, Kaleb Tollefson, and Brandon Osborne all had 8 points with Osborne leading the Vikings with 5 assists. Overall, Pelican Rapids was 23-47 (49%) from the field and made 5-10 (50%) threes while going 14-18 (78%) from the free throw line. Breckenridge outrebounded the Vikings 38-29.

“We actually shot the ball fairly well when we did get shots up,” stated Coach Gullingsrud. “The problem was we didn’t get many opportunities to shoot the ball with all of the turnovers that we had. We need to take better care of the basketball, even against teams that pressure defensively as well as Breckenridge does. It is still early in the season, but we definitely know the areas we need to improve in if we want to be able to compete with teams the caliber of Breckenridge.”
