The Pelican Rapids boys basketball team traveled to Hillcrest Lutheran Academy  December 12 for a makeup of their game that was postponed a week earlier.

The Comets took control of the game in the first half and built a 46-26 lead at the half. The Vikings were not able to get any closer in the second half as Hillcrest went on to a 74-54 win.

“Hillcrest was able to jump out to a 13-2 lead on us and really set the tone for the game from the start,” commented head coach John Gullingsrud. “We gave them too many second chance points as they had 19 offensive rebounds and we didn’t take care of the ball very well which also led to easy looks for them on the offensive end.”

Oakley Kress led Pelican Rapids with 14 points, and Donovan Young was also in double figures with 12. Nick Schermerhorn had 9 points as he connected on 3-4 from behind the arc. Jacob Gottenborg led the Vikings with 7 rebounds.

Pelican Rapids was 21-54 (39%) from the field and made 6-9 (67%) threes. The Comets outrebounded the Vikings 50-29.

“We knew coming into the game that this would be a very good early season test for our guys as Hillcrest had a great season last year and returned many players from that team,” said Coach Gullingsrud.
