The Pelican Rapids boys basketball team took to the road for their third straight game to start the season last December 15 as they took on the East Grand Forks Green Wave in a section 8AA contest.
The Vikings held a slim 37-34 lead at the half, but the Green Wave came back in the second to take a 74-67 win over the visiting Vikings.
“Our guys came out and played well in the first half as we held a double digit lead midway through it,” stated head coach John Gullingsrud. “We just turned the ball over on way too many possessions that helped keep East Grand Forks in the game and within striking distance. That, combined with some first half foul trouble for us, enabled the Green Wave to get back in the game. The turnover problem continued into the second half and we were unable to get stops on the defensive end to sustain our lead.”
Pelican Rapids had a very balanced scoring night as Donovan Young, Zack Sjolie, and Dillion Such led the way with 11 points each. Oakley Kress was also in double figured with 10 points, while Jacob Gottenborg and Nick Schermerhorn had 9 points apiece. Gottenborg also led the Vikings with 13 rebounds and 7 assists.
Pelican Rapids was 27-51 (53%) shooting overall and made 3-13 (23%) threes. They also won the rebounding battle with the Green Wave 40-34.
“The turnovers really hurt us in this game as we cannot expect to go on the road and win when we turn it over as many times as we did,” commented Coach Gullingsrud. “We also allowed East Grand Forks 15 offensive rebounds, and when you combine that with the turnover troubles, it is just very difficult to win a game on the road. I am still encouraged by the play of some of our newcomers to the varsity scene.”
