What started as a gentle drizzle turned into winds of 30+ mph which was accompanied by heavy rain for the majority of the match in Detroit Lakes Oct. 4.
But the Pelican Rapids High School Vikings soccer team was not deterred by the conditions. Playing well despite the conditions, the Vikings maintained well over 50 percent of the possession throughout the match. However a few key mistakes at inopportune times created three different goal scoring opportunities for the Lakers who were able to convert in all three situations.
Alan Villagomez again was exceptional for the Vikings in the midfield playing virtually mistake free on offense and making numerous interceptions and recoveries on defense to earn himself Man of the Match honors for the Vikings.
Final Score: Lakers 3 Vikings 0
Man of the Match: Alan Villagomez
Vikings fall to Hibbing in overtime
Saturday the Vikings concluded their regular season in Hibbing with an overtime loss to the Blue Jackets.
The Vikings recently switched to a 3-5-2 formation with the intention of getting more players forward in the attack and this proved very effective in the first half with more shots on goal (10) than they had had in their previous two games combined.
The biggest play of which came when Alfredo Centeno found Oscar Diaz across the face of the goal and Diaz was able to convert his first goal of the season to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
Shortly into the second half the Blue Jackets equalized to make the score 1-1. From there the teams both exchanged multiple chances before regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.
Overtime began with the Vikings struggling to organize their defense and Hibbing took advantage scoring to go ahead 2-1 before adding a second before time expired in the overtime session to win by a final score of 3-1.
