The Pelican Rapids Vikings volleyball team traveled to Fergus Fall October 8 to participate in the Fergus Falls Invitational Tournament.

The Vikings were in a pool with Underwood, Fergus Falls, and Richland and played a 2 out of 3 matches in pool play before bracketing out to gold, silver, or bronze division.

The Vikings were excited to match up with the top ranked of the South 6A subsection Underwood Rockets. The Vikings came out strong offensively and tried to move the ball around and utilize all hitters.

“The Vikings knew they would be going to their athletic OH hitter Tinjum and we did our best to try and slow her down,” said Coach Heidi Isaman.

The Vikings lost a close exciting first set 27-25 but came back strong offensively and played good defense to win set 2, 25-17.

Set 3 was tight until the Vikings got a nice 5 point run to seal the deal and beat the Rockets in set 3, 15-11.

The Vikings started strong with Adriana Torres and Grace Johnson hitting very well. The Vikings won set 1 25-19. The Otters had a 7 point run on our serve receive and blocking errors and the Vikings just couldn’t fight back. The Vikings lost set 2, 14-25.

Still deflated from the inability to slow their middles down the Vikings did not bring enough energy and communication to get back in and lost set 3, 8-15.

Pelican beats Richland in two

The last pool play game was against the Richland Colts.

“Our middle blockers picked up the pace a bit and we passed the ball a lot better. Our servers also did a good job of keeping the Colts out of system often,” said Coach Isaman.

The Vikings still did not play their best game but started to pull themselves together after the FF lost and beat the Colts in 2 sets with scores of 25-23 and 25-16.

After a close outcome the Vikings were seeded 2nd in their pool advancing to the silver division.
