The Pelican Rapids Vikings received the opening kick-off for the first time this season. It set a good early tone for the Vikings as they took the opening possession for a touchdown and an early lead.

A key play on the drive was a third and 10 screen pass from Oakley Kress to Jacob Gottenborg that was good for 55 yards and a first and goal at the 5 yard line.

A couple of plays later Carlan Haugrud got the Vikings on the board with a 5 yard touchdown run. The PAT failed and the Vikings had a 6 – 0 lead.

Breckenridge came back with a strong drive but the Vikings defense came up big. With the Cowboys facing a third and goal at the two yard line Jacob Gottenborg deflected a pass and eventually intercepted it to end the drive and get the ball back for the Vikings.

Pelican Rapids was unable to take advantage of that possession as they turned it over with a fumble. Breckenridge converted the turnover into points scoring late in the first quarter. With the extra point kick the Cowboys had a 7 – 6 lead after one quarter.

“I was really pleased with the effort that we played with. Defensively we made some plays that we hadn’t been able to make in previous games. While the defense improved, the offense wasn’t able to maintain it’s level of play established the last couple of games,” said Coach Dave Haugen.

Three turnovers in the first half ended drives and Breckenridge capitalized with touchdowns. Scoring on the last play of the half the Cowboys built a 28 – 6 lead.

The second half found Breckenridge continue to establish themselves and pull away with the win.

“Defensivley I thought our line played well and allowed the linebackers to make more tackles for no gain or short gains. There were definitely plays in this game that we are going to point to as the type of plays that we can build on going forward,” added Coach Haugen.
