Richard “Dick” Scholberg, age 85, of West Fargo, ND died Thursday, September 22, 2016 at the Fargo VA Hospital holding the hand of his love, Joan.
Richard was born October 22, 1930 in Williston, North Dakota to Dr. Martin and Gertrude (Carpenter) Scholberg. He grew up in western North Dakota, often traveling with his father who was a traveling dentist. In 1949 Dick graduated from Minot High School and then studied business at the Minot State College.
Richard (known to all his service buddies as “Boomer”) served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. After his military duty he moved to Minneapolis where he worked for Bemis Bag Co. where he met Joan Lutz. On September 17, 1955 Richard was united in marriage with Joan. They lived in Minneapolis for a period of time then Richard and Joan moved to Bismarck where Dick worked for General Electric Corporation. Richard and Joan then moved to Minneapolis and thereafter moved to Fargo where Dick continued to work for General Electric. He also worked for Red River Hardware then Mid-State Oil. In 1979 Dick purchased Nationwide Cleaning Systems, a janitorial service, in which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1993. After retirement Dick and Joan moved permanently to their summer home on Crystal Lake near Pelican Rapids. In 2008, Richard and Joan returned to the Fargo area and settled in West Fargo.
Dick was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of rural Pelican Rapids, associate member of Olivet Lutheran Church in Fargo, and former member of Gateway Lions Club being extremely active in blind read entire story. . . .
John Ned Lyden, age 87, of Pelican Rapids, MN, died very peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls, MN.
John was born May 12, 1929 in Pelican Rapids, MN, to Ned Algot and Christine (Strom) Lyden. He was baptized and confirmed at Central Lutheran Church, rural Pelican Rapids. He attended school in Pelican Rapids, graduating from Pelican Rapids High School in 1947. He entered the US Army in 1954 and served his country during the Korean War achieving the rank of Specialist 4 and was discharged with honors in 1956.
On October 26, 1957 John married Bonita (Bonnie) Ruud at Central Lutheran Church in rural Pelican Rapids. He started farming with his father as a young boy on the Lyden family farm, homesteaded in 1883. John continued with dairy cows and crops until retiring in 1991. They continued to live on the farm until 2012 and he and Bonnie spent many enjoyable days together hosting their granddaughters, family and friends at their cabin on Lake Lida. John was very active in Central Lutheran Church, serving on the council and was a lifelong member. He was a member and participated in a variety of activities with American Legion Post #17 in Pelican Rapids and was involved with the 4-H. John enjoyed fishing; deer, goose, and duck hunting; trapping; and dancing. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, and motorcycling.
John is survived by his wife, Bonnie, Rothsay; son, Glenn (Deb Shirley) Lyden, Rochester; daughter, read entire story. . . .
Shirley Mae Anderson, 86, of Pelican Rapids, MN and Pearce, AZ died peacefully in her home on Lake Olaf surrounded by loved ones on September 9, 2016.
Shirley leaves behind 5 children: Cynthia Anderson (Peter Konsterlie), Denise (Art) Eggman, Keneth (Linda) Anderson, Elliott (Chris) Anderson and Stephanie (Tim) Cronin; 9 grandchildren: Ronald, Cassandra, Zoe, Rachel, Quinn, Jadyn, Heather, Tommy and Robin; great-grandchildren: Noah and Summer; brothers: Kenneth Swanson, Dennis (Vera) Swanson, Marvin (Sherry) Swanson, Orville (Anne) Swanson; sisters: Dianne Berg, and Barbara (Jack) Leeman; as well as many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Duane Winslow Anderson; granddaughter, Noelle Marie Anderson; sister LaVerne Govednik; and brothers-in-law Martin Govednik and Ronald Berg.
Shirley was born in Rush City, Minnesota to Clarence and Helen Swanson on June 8, 1930. She grew up on a dairy farm in Big Lake, Minnesota where she was crowned “queen” in high school. She attended St. Cloud State Teachers College and then taught elementary school in Anoka and Barnesville, Minnesota. Shirley was an adventurer, traveling to Europe with her friend Norma in 1953 on the Queen Mary, and returning on the Queen Elizabeth three months later. In 1956, she moved to Alaska with Norma and waitressed at the Highland Fling in Anchorage, before Alaska was even a state! Upon returning to the lower 48, she worked as a “stewardess” for Trans Texas Airlines, and eventually returned to her career in read entire story. . . .
Mardella (Mardy) E. Martin passed away; September 23, 2016. Mardy was born on the family farm near Ellendale, ND on November 10, 1928.
Mardy was united in marriage to Richard B. Gabe in 1949 until his death in 1954. In 1957 Mardy married George Martin and moved to Pelican Lake in 1961.
As the Office Manager/“HUB” for Martin Engineering Company, Chief Flower Director at Petal Pusher Garden Center and official record keeper of the ice out dates for Pelican Lake until her death, she will be greatly missed.
Mardy had a passion for a good bridge game, crossword puzzles (in ink) and RED flowers with a splash of white.
Mardy and George traveled the world; with her favorite country being Thailand, but Pelican Lake was her love and the most beautiful of all.
Mardy is survived by Richard (Rachael) Gabe, Jack Martin (Jane), Paula Skaalrud, Julie Martin and Dorothea (Michael) Haugrud; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin Dale Lemke, age 77, a resident of Erhard, died Wednesday, September 21, 2016, at Lake Region Healthcare in Fergus Falls.
Marvin was born on March 8, 1939, to Fritz and Marie (Siedel) Lemke on the family farm in Erhard’s Grove Township. He attended country school in rural Erhard. Marvin was baptized at Bagtesvold Lutheran Church and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Erhard.
On August 9, 1959, Marvin was married to LaVonne Joyce Oliphant at Foxhome Methodist Church in Foxhome. For most of his life, he farmed and milked cows and was always giving directions using landmarks or objects as a turning point. He had a witty spirit where a person never knew if he was kidding or serious. He had an infectious smile and a twinkle in his eye especially while he listened to polka music on Sundays on multiple radio and tv stations.
Marvin was a member of the Snow Drifters Snowmobile Club and Grace Lutheran Church in Erhard. He enjoyed shooting pool, snowmobiling, polka music, dancing and anything John Deere. Watching Shane and Jamie in the field also brought him great joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fritz and Marie Lemke; his wife, LaVonne Lemke; an infant son; a brother, Byron Lemke; a sister, Eileen Halverson; two brothers-in-law; and two sisters-in-law.

June Elizabeth Pederson Wood, age 85, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at The Cottages in Detroit Lakes. A funeral service was at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2016, at David Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. A visitation was from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 16, 2016; with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. The visitation continued one hour prior to the service on Saturday. A burial followed at Oak Grove Cemetery. The David-Donehower Funeral Home served the family.
Ernest Restad, age 99, of Pelican Rapids, MN, died Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Pelican Valley Health Center in Pelican Rapids, MN.
Ernest “Ernie” Julian Restad was born on January 13, 1917 to Alfred Peder “A.P.” and Hilda Elise (Krogstad) Restad. He was born on the family farm, where he lived until 1989, when he and Marcie built a home in town. He had been a lifelong member of Grove Lake Lutheran Church where he was baptized, confirmed, and married. He attended Country School District #183.
Ernie was married to Marcella “Marcie” Louise Janke on July 19, 1942 at the Grove Lake Parsonage in Pelican Rapids.
Ernie served his country in the US Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946. By his time of discharge, he had attained the rank of staff sergeant. He returned home to continue what he had started in his youth, Ernie’s lifetime love and labor of dairy farming. Stuart and Birdie took over the farm in 1982, but he never truly retired from doing farm work.
He and Marcie enjoyed music, dancing, and playing cards. After retirement, he and Marcie took many car and bus trips all over the United States. During his lifetime, he served on numerous boards including Grove Lake Church, Park Region Coop Board, Scambler Township Clerk, Oscar Parke Mutual Insurance Board, and Oscar Parke Township Fire Insurance. read entire story. . . .
Kathleen Ernst, 66, formerly of Barnesville and Moorhead, passed away Monday, September 12, 2016 at Hawley Assisted Living, Hawley, MN.
Funeral Services were Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at 2 p.m. at St. James United Church of Christ with Pastor Darrel Saathoff officiating. There was visitation 1 hour prior to the funeral. Burial was at City Cemetery, Barnesville, MN.
Kathleen LaRue Ernst was born on January 11, 1950 in Moorhead, MN to Louis and Harriet (Egge) Ernst. She was confirmed at St. James United Church of Christ.
Kathleen graduated from Barnesville High School in 1968. She moved to Minneapolis, MN shortly after graduation and started a career in the secretarial field. After leaving Minneapolis she lived in Barnesville for a short time, then moved to Moorhead, MN where she lived most of her life. She lived at the Hawley Assisted Living for a short time before her death.
Kathleen lived a simple life, enjoying her family. She was an accomplished pianist and organist, enjoying classical music. She loved to write, anything from poetry to letters to family and friends. Kathleen also loved to draw. read entire story. . . .
Norman Albert Craig, 88, a resident of Erhard, died Saturday, September 10, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Norman was born on April 29, 1928, in Fergus Falls, the son of Richard C. and Regina (Harles) Craig. He attended school in Fergus Falls. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1950 and was granted a hardship discharge.
On November 28, 1950, Norman married Elizabeth Ann Lehn in Elizabeth. Norman worked at the shipyards and Boeing in 1951. In 1954, they moved to Colfax, ND, where he worked on the railroad and ran a pub. Betty and Norm moved to Battle Lake in 1958, where they owned and operated the “78 Club” until 1975. Lastly, Norm worked for the State of Minnesota at the Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center for twenty-eight years, retiring in 1980.
Norm was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Elizabeth and the Minnesota State Employee Association. He enjoyed four-wheeling, being outdoors and mowing the lawn. He also enjoyed the companionship of his African Grey Parrots, Dusty and Friday.
