Berton Hovland

Berton C. Hovland, 83, of Fergus Falls, died Sunday, March 15, 2015, at his home.
  Berton Hovland was born on April 9, 1931 to Henry O. and Emelia Marie (Zimmerman) Hovland on his grandparents’ farm in Elizabeth Township, Ottertail County, Minnesota. He passed away peacefully at age 83 on March 15, 2015 after spending the day surrounded by three generations of his loving family.
Bert spent his early childhood living near Maplewood State Park until his family moved to a dairy farm near Elizabeth, MN. He attended a one-room schoolhouse nearby and graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1949.  read entire story. . . .

Vernalee Riewer

Vernalee “Butch” Riewer, age 74 of Perham, MN died Wednesday, March 18, 2015 in Perham Living. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 21 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Perham Living chapel. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Vernalee was born in Hibbing, MN on May 5, 1940 the daughter of Vernon and Norma (Garrison) Nygaard.  Vernalee graduated at Moorhead High School and went on to graduate at Interstate Business School also in Moorhead. She was united in marriage to Donavon O’Brien on June 1, 1958 in Baker, MN. Together they farmed near Dent, MN. Vernalee worked at Rocky’s Resort for 18 years and later managed the Perham VFW for 8 years. She was united in marriage to William Riewer in Fergus Falls, MN on April 21, 1993. Vernalee liked to read books, loved hummingbirds, flowers and bird watching. She was also a member of the Dent American Legion Auxiliary.  read entire story. . . .

Earl Hallstrom

Earl “Bud” Nansen Hallstrom was born June 29, 1924, in Polk County Hospital, Thief River Falls, MN, to Henry “Hank” and Leticia “Lettie” Hallstrom.  Bud was raised in the Thief River Falls area where he attended Black River School.  He furthered his education at the Agricultural College in Crookston, MN.
  On May 1, 1947, Bud married Lorraine Hebert, in Moorhead, MN. Bud worked as a truck driver for Red Owl stores for 42 and a half years. While working for Red Owl, Bud served on the executive board for the Teamsters for twelve years and job steward for twenty-two years. They purchased the Birchwood Golf Course in Pelican Rapids, MN, in 1967 and owned that for the next eight years. Bud and Lorraine were later divorced.  
Bud met Lillian “Betty” Cypret and together they built a life and owned a home on Little Toad Lake. He moved to Rochert, MN, in 2003, when he bought the Hebert family lake place on Cotton Lake. For thirty years, Bud made his winter home in Donna, TX, and his summer home on Cotton Lake, with Betty, where they created many wonderful memories for us all.  read entire story. . . .

David Sumpter

David L. Sumpter, age 72, of Pelican Lake, MN, passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at his home following surgery.
 David was born on April 18, 1942 in Fargo, ND, the loving son of Floyd and Henrietta (Hanusch) Sumpter.  David grew up in West Fargo and graduated from Fargo High School.  He relocated to Davis, IL, where he met his beloved wife, Patricia Helwig. They were united in marriage on April 11, 1970 and to this union one daughter, Ann Marie who misses them both dearly.
David worked at Sheet Metal Worker Local Union 219, Rockford, IL. He was part of this union for over 40 years.
David loved his home on Pelican Lake, his 1931 Ford Model A, and his family. He enjoyed reacquainting with his childhood buddies and making new ones, who would hang out and visit at the cabin. These friends brought him great joy and happiness.  read entire story. . . .

Julie Kaneen

Julie ‘Julz’ Marjorie Kaneen, 31, of Kalispell, MT,  passed away suddenly on the morning of Feb. 22, 2015.
 Julie was born in Whitefish, MT on Nov. 26, 1983, to William “Bill” and Ellen Ann Kaneen of Kalispell, MT. She attended Glacier Christian Academy through sixth grade, started public school in Columbia Falls in seventh grade and continued on to graduate from Columbia Falls High School, Class of 2003. During that time she played many sports including volleyball, soccer, basketball and softball where she was awarded a Most Valuable Player Award. Julie then started college at Flathead Valley Community College and graduated Class of 2005, with an Associates of Arts degree.  read entire story. . . .

Wilma Tabbut

Wilma Elizabeth (Askew) Tabbut was born June 25, 1918, in Alberta, Canada to Turner and Margaret Darlene Askew.  Her father’s family had settled there after immigrating from England. They later moved to Minnesota and Wilma attended high school in Casselton, ND and Borup, MN. She earned her teaching credentials from Moorhead Teacher’s College in Moorhead, MN. She taught school in Sunburg, MN, White Earth Indian Reservation, and San Diego, CA in the early 1940s.
Wilma was united in marriage to Quintin Tabbut in 1943 at San Diego, California. Quintin was serving in the United States Navy at the time. After returning home from the Service, they farmed near Barnesville, Minnesota for eight years. In 1953 they moved to Aurdal Township near Fergus Falls where they farmed and made their home.   Wilma was a devoted wife for 52 years and loving mother to seven children. She enjoyed each of her 21 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.  read entire story. . . .

Lillian Bergquist

Lillian L. Bergquist age 85 of Detroit Lakes, MN passed away peacefully at home on March 1, 2015, under the loving care of her family and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Lillian Louise Bergquist was born on December 27, 1929 in Pelican Rapids, MN to Olavus and Inga (Stephenson) Engebretson. She grew up and received her education in Pelican Rapids. In her youth, Lillian worked at the drycleaners and volunteered at the hospital. She was united in marriage to Ralph Bergquist at Augustana Lutheran Church in rural Detroit Lakes and they had three sons. Besides raising her sons on the family farm, she also worked at West Central turkey plant in Pelican Rapids for many years.  read entire story. . . .

Helen Johnson

Helen Johnson, age 85, of Pelican Rapids, MN, died Thursday, March 5, 2015 at the Pelican Valley Health Center in Pelican Rapids.
Helen Lucille Toftely was born on July 26, 1929 in Pelican Rapids the daughter of Edwin and Bertha (Erickson) Toftely. She was baptized and confirmed at the First Congregational United Church of Christ Church in Pelican Rapids. Helen graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1947. On June 27, 1951 Helen was united with Kenneth “Kenny” Johnson at the First Congregational United Church of Christ Church in Pelican Rapids. Helen was a homemaker and raised her two daughters, Sandra and Susan. Kenny died on February 24, 2008. In November of 2012 she moved into the Riverfront on Main in Pelican Rapids.  read entire story. . . .

Marilyn Peltoniemi

Marilyn Lois (Baglien) Peltoniemi, age 86, of Minneapolis, formerly of Wadena, passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2015, after a brief hospitalization at Hennepin County Medical Center, surrounded by her children. She was born April 25, 1928, in Pelican Rapids, MN, to Syverin and Sophie (Erickson) Baglien. She grew up there, attending school and graduating in 1946. She attended Moorhead State Teachers College, where she met Carl W. S. Peltoniemi, Sr., of New York Mills. They married on June 19, 1948, and then moved to Saint Paul for three and a half years while Carl attended Saint Paul College of Law. Two sons, Eric and Carl, Jr., were born to them while they lived there. After graduation they moved to Duluth for two years, and then to Wadena in 1953, where Carl established his practice. In Wadena, Marilyn gave birth to a daughter, Joan. Wadena was Marilyn and Carl’s home for over 60 years. Carl passed away on March 1, 2013, in Wadena. They had 63 and one half years together. Marilyn moved to Minneapolis in November, 2013, to be near her children.  read entire story. . . .
