D.E. “Sammy” Braton was born on February 6, 1922 to Samuel Sr. and Gladys (Grant) Braton in Prairie View Township, Wilkin County, MN. He attended 1st-8th grade at a country school in Prairie View Township.

There was a memorial service on Friday, April 22 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Enderlin, ND. Grace Leigh Ziebell, 9, died on Friday, April 15 from complications of pneumonia. A beacon of hope to everyone who knew her, “Gracie girl” defied the odds, celebrating nine blessed birthdays after doctors warned she may never live to see her first. She proved day after day that the word never is nothing more than a challenge to those who are strong in spirit.
With seven older brothers, Grace was God’s gift to her parents, Rachel and Michael, who had prayed for a daughter to bring home to their boys. Gary Haga, age 54, died Saturday, April 9, 2016 at his home in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota.
Gary Wayne Haga was born April 9, 1962 in Pelican Rapids, MN, to Leonard and Angeline (Sayers) Haga. He attended school in Pelican Rapids and graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1980. Gary went to school at the Brown Institute of Broadcasting in Minneapolis, MN for TV/Radio Broadcasting. Gary moved to Colorado and worked at a radio station for a period of time. He moved back to Minnesota where he attended Fergus Falls Community College for journalism. His education continued at Willmar College where he studied philosophy. Gary earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Moorhead State University. He taught elementary education and was a permanent substitute in the Pelican Rapids and the entire surrounding area. Robert “Bob” Ronningen, 91, resident of rural Pelican Rapids, MN, died on Friday, April 15, 2016 at the VA Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Robert Harmon Ronningen was born on January 30, 1925 to James Marion and Effie (Holt) Ronningen on the family farm in Pelican Township. As a young man he served his country in the US Army during WW II from 1944-1946. He was in the African and European Theater Campaigns. Following his service, he returned home to Minnesota and on June 8, 1947 was united in marriage to Ella Marie Holloway in Fergus Falls.
Bob worked at Gilbert Sorum Auto Repair Shop and George Sanstead Auto Repair. Bob and Ella raised their children on the family farm north of Pelican Rapids where he was a dairy farmer for over 40 years. After retiring in 1986, farming never left his blood and he worked for Trosvig Farms. He was a lifetime member of the Pelican Rapids VFW and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Hank A. Van Cleef, age 61, died Monday, April 11, 2016 at his home in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota.
Henry Anthony Van Cleef was born February 25, 1955 in Pelican Rapids, MN, to John and Grace (Motz) Van Cleef. He attended school in Pelican Rapids, and then he worked at Fergus Brick and Dynamic Homes, both in Fergus Falls. Hank graduated from Detroit Lakes Technical College as a Building Services Technician. In 1992 he began to work for Pelican Ambulance as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). From 1994 to 2006 Hank worked for Pelican Ambulance as a Paramedic. On March 20, 2004, Hank was united in marriage with Angela Bristol at Pelican Rapids Baptist Church. Marcie was born September 25, 1919 in Ottertail, MN to Wilhelm and Mary (Heyen) Janke.
Marcie is survived by her husband Ernest; daughter, Cheryl (Norris) Hushagen of Stanchfield, MN; son Stuart (Roberta) Restad of Pelican Rapids; daughter-in-law Terri Restad of Kennewick, WA; sisters: Shirley Welch, Lois Avila, and Sharon (Ron) Hill; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Wayne Griep, 78, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at his home near Pelican Rapids, MN.
Wayne was born on June 11, 1937 to Benard and Elsie (Abraham) Griep in Isanti, MN. When he was younger Wayne farmed with his father. From 1961 to 1963 Wayne served in the United States Army. On October 29, 1963 Wayne was united in marriage with Janice Harper. They made their home in Crystal, MN. Wayne worked at Kline Auto and Witte’s Radiator in Minneapolis for several years. Wayne and Janice started Wayne’s Auto and Truck Service in New Hope, MN. Together they ran that for about 20 years. In the early 1970s, Wayne and Janice bought property on South Lake Lida. James Leo Welder, age 65, a resident of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, died on March 28, 2016, at Sanford Health in Fargo, North Dakota.
Jimmy passed away peacefully in the arms of his family. As he requested, there will be no services. There will be a Celebration of Life at the farm later this summer. Gone too soon.

James Kenneth Handorff of Mesa, AZ passed away on March 27, 2016 at age 82 after a battle with dementia. Jim was born near Cyrus, MN March 2, 1934, to Frank and Edna (Hawkinson) Handorff. He was the youngest of 7 children. Jim spent his school years in Glenwood, MN, graduating from Glenwood High in 1953.
He obtained a Bachelor Degree in Biology Education and a minor in Physical Education from Moorhead State, Moorhead, MN and a Masters of Education from Kent State University, Kent, OH.
December, 1957, he was united in marriage to Merriam (Mimi) Einhouse of Kent, OH.
He started his teaching career at Sieberling Elementary, Akron, OH where each week he taught Phy Ed to 1200 students grades 1 to 6. His next assignment was at Stow High School, Stow, OH teaching Biology. He and Mimi moved from OH to MN in 1961 and Jim began teaching Biology and Junior High Science at Pelican Rapids High School, Pelican Rapids, MN where he remained until he retired in 1993. The last 20 years of his teaching career at Pelican Rapids he was the high school golf coach. Rosella Flath, age 82, died Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the Pioneer Care Center in Fergus Falls after suffering many years with the afflictions of Alzheimer’s.
Rosella Irene Nygaard was born July 11, 1933 in Prairie View Township, Wilkin County, Minnesota. She was the oldest child of Robert Martinus Nygaard and Esther Rose Garrison Nygaard. On September 17, she was baptized at the Sille Bethania Congregational Church in Otter Tail County with Mr. and Mrs. J Greenfeld, Vernon Nygaard and Dola Garrison as her sponsors.
Until 1944, she and her family lived in Minnesota, first in Wolverton and then in the mining range community of Hibbing. Following her father’s work in the mines, the family moved to Globe, Arizona, where they stayed until 1947 before coming back to Otter Tail County. Rosella lived the rest of her life here.
A few years after returning to Minnesota, while working on the farm of Velma and Lenny Lund and caring for their children in the rural Richville area, Rosella met her future husband Vernon Flath.
